Compiled by William N. Bender, Ph.D.

Return to New Teaching Ideas

These songs and chants for various content areas were composed by teachers around the nation.

I. Rounding Numbers

Use a “military march” cadence of 4 beats (I’ve placed an X where the beats come in the first several lines).

X   X
0,   1,  2, 3,  4

(repeat)

X   X
Back it down don't add no more!

(repeat)

X   X
5,   6,  7, 8,  9

(repeat)

X   X
Add one more, all the time!

(repeat)

X   X
0,   1,  2, 3,  4

(repeat)

X   X
Back it down right to the floor!   (students bend toward the floor)

(repeat)

X   X
5,   6,  7, 8,  9

(repeat)

X   X
Teach that number how to climb!    (students reach up toward the sky)

(repeat)

2. Teaching The Order of Operations in Long Division

Use the Tune Of  “Ten little Indians”  (You may also use hand motions to represent operations (divide is represented by “air drawing” a division symbol, multiply by crossing arms to get a “times sign” Subtract by streaching arms to one’s side to look like a minus sign, and “bring down” means bend over and lower hand to the floor).

Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down
Divide, multiply, subtract, bring down
These are the steps to division

3.  A Song Teaching Polygons

(Tune- “Mary Had A Little Lamb”)

Verse 1

This class has polygons to learn
Polygons to learn, polygons to learn.
This class has polygons to learn
      All though the year

Verse 2

We started out with 5 of them
Five of them, five of them
We started out with 5 of them
And worked our way from there

Verse 3

Triangles are the first to know
First to know, first to know
Triangles are the first to know
      They have 3 sides – it’s cool

Verse 4

Quadrilaterals have 4 sides
Have 4 sides, have 4 sides
Quadrilaterals have 4 sides
      Like the squares and rectangles

Verse 5

A 5-sided shape is a pentagon
      Pentagon, pentagon
A 5-sided shape is a pentagon
      Like the one in Washington

Verse 6

A hexagon it has 6 sides
Has 6 sides, has 6 sides
A hexagon it has 6 sides
Like some picnic  tables just outside

Verse 7

A stop sign is an octagon
      Octagon, octagon
A stop sign is an octagon
      Because is has 8 sides

3.    A Rap for Polygon Power (Using a “rap” rhythm)

A polygon is a figure that’s cool
It’s got straight sides and you need to know

Triangles – they all have three sides
They can be tall, they can be wide

Quad-driangles have 4 sides
Yes It’s true- ain’t no lie

On a pentagon the sides are five
Move to the beat, now stay alive

If a hexagon is whatcha want to see
Then six sides is what it’s got to be

A stop sign is an octagon- it’s got
8 sides our song is done

Now STOP, STOP, Eight sides  STOP!

4.  Perimeter & Area (military march time)

Perimeter we can measure
Add up all the sides
Area is the treasure
Everything inside!

5.   Proportions (Tune- “the Addams Family”)

This will solve a proportion
      Just simplify the fraction
Cross multiply the numbers
      Dividing will get you there

Da, da, da, da (2 times snap finger)  --repeat
Da, da, da, da, Da, da, da, da, Da, da, da, da

This will write a proportion
      Top units have to match
The same is true for the bottom
      Now you’re ready to solve

6.   Fractions
(Tune - “When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again"/"The Ants Go Marching”)

A fraction has 2 parts, 2 parts (Hoorah, Hoorah)
A fraction has 2 parts, 2 parts (Hoorah, Hoorah)
The top part is the numerator,
The bottom part is the denominator
And we’ll all feel grand when
     Fraction comes marching home

7.  Shapes
(Tune- Three Blind Mice)

I am a circle, I am a circle
I am so cool, I am so cool
I have no sides, I have no corners
Ever seen such a shape as me?
I am a circle, I am a circle

I am a triangle, I am a triangle
I am so cool, I am so cool
I have three sides, I have three corners
Ever seen such a shape as me?
I am a triangle, I am a triangle

I am a square, I am a square
I am so cool, I am so cool
I have four equal sides, I have four corners
Ever seen such a shape as me?
I am a square, I am a square

I am a rectangle, I am a rectangle
I am so cool, I am so cool
I have four sides, I have four corners
Ever seen such a shape as me?
I am a rectangle, I am a rectangle
